The term “inner stillness” came to me during an early morning meditation a couple months ago, and it has stuck with me ever since.
It aligns with presence, the mindless state, identifying with or as the eternal consciousness rather than the temporary human, being the observer instead of the thinker, and so on.
But for me, there is something incredibly powerful about the term “inner stillness”. All I have to do is say it in my mind and I am immediately transformed.
Close your eyes and hold up your hand. Feel it. Feel the shape, the coolness or the warmth. Notice what it’s like to have that hand, to be connected to it, and all of the sensations you can feel in it. The energy moving through it. Just feel everything you can about it.
Now consider who or what is doing the feeling of the hand, and from where. Maybe you think of your head, as I do. A tiny point of consciousness right in the middle of your brain is what is doing the feeling. Some people may go to their hearts and find that the feeler is in the center of the heart space. Or maybe it’s somewhere else.
Now turn inward, and in the same way you felt your hand a moment ago, feel the feeler. Feel that thing, that point of consciousness, and just sit with it, observe it. Feel everything you can about it in the same way you did with your hand.
You can go back and forth a few times, feeling your hand again, then feeling the thing that is feeling the hand until you get a good grasp of it.
When I do this, I feel a profound inner stillness. It’s like the world disappears and I am gazing upon my true self, looking deep within. Peering into the infinite.
When you feel the feeler, that is you. That is who you are, what you really are. An awareness, a point of view. That is who you’ve always been through every life and every experience across eternity. That is what you’ll always be.
That awareness doesn’t judge anyone or anything. It doesn’t care. It just observes. It just is.
The mental chatter, the regrets, the worries, the suffering – none of that is you. You are the awareness observing all of these things.
You are the inner stillness. That is what you are in truth.
It is eternal, inexorable, untouchable. No one and no thing can ever fuck with it in any way. It is supreme.
The more you identify with that inner stillness, the more you become it, the more free you are in every way. You don’t become immersed in all of the mental chatter, it just moves through you. All fear dissolves. And when you are able to move beyond the fear, you will find that what fills the void is love.
Ultimately, only two emotions exist. Fear and love. Everything else is a variation, a different flavor. Think about it.
Fear is of the mind. Love is you.
Be you.
