We Are Creators

We humans were born to create. That is our purpose, our prime directive. When we are not creating, we are not acting in accordance with our prime directive, and it becomes difficult or impossible to live a fulfilling life. To be happy.

Traditionally and evolutionarily speaking, men created shelter, sustenance, business and wealth, while women created babies, which is to say human life. Going back to the dawn of time, back when our ancient ancestors were first blessed with self-aware consciousness, they have imagined what they were going to create, then they created it.

My dogs, bless their souls, are not creators. They are lazy sleepers with no imagination, albeit a lot of heart.

There are people in this world who are more useless than my dogs. These people are unhappy because they aren’t creating anything. They aren’t embracing their humanness, and they’re wasting their precious time here on Earth. Even if they lie to themselves and think whatever they’re doing is okay, they know on a subconscious level that they’re lazy slobs who have never and will probably never accomplish anything of value. It’s a shame because every single person has so much potential.

For years I didn’t create shit. I consumed. I consumed a lot of fast food and a lot of television and all the mind rape that goes with it. Every day I’d come home from my shitty job and sit in front of the TV for hours and hours, usually falling asleep in front of it. My brain was rotting, my belly was growing, and my spirits sank more and more each day. In college I was writing, playing the flute and creating beautiful music. After graduation all of that stopped and I was in a funk. I was irritable, I became angry with my family easily, angry with anyone easily. That was an outward projection of the anger I had with myself, although I didn’t know it at the time.

It wasn’t until I stopped being the lazy piece of shit I had become that I was able to be very happy again. I started to build, to create. I built my body in the gym. I built new relationships and friendships. I cut TV out of my life, instead spending my time with friends, good books, and in front of my computer writing. I can’t say it enough: if everyone would sell his television and spend those hours doing something productive, the world would be a much, much better place and people would be immeasurably happier.

Look at some of these unbelievable creations:

An enormous building that displays the creators’ unbelievable mastery of physics. A novel, read by millions, that shows the human condition in America during one of its toughest eras. Symphonies, composed hundreds of years ago, that still send intense chills down people’s spines. These are all masterpieces. Invaluable contributions to the human race.

Think about the internet. What an unbelievable creation. It has connected the entire world in a way that was inconceivable twenty years ago. Many thanks to Al Gore.

Take a look at yourself and think about when you were happiest. Odds are that you were, in some way, creating something of value. Embracing your humanness.

Starting this blog was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Even though not many people follow it yet (and you can help me by spreading the word), every day I’m thinking of what to write, what to create. It has sparked my productive spirit, and it truly makes me happier. I hope it makes you happier as well.
